Referee Signals

Common Referee Signals

Delayed Whistle

An official waits to blow his whistle:
until the offending team touches the puck in the case of
offsides or a penalty;
or until the non-offending team touches the puck in the case of icing.

Referee signal: The referee will extend his non-whistle hand directly into the air with his hand open.

Goal

Signals that the puck has legally crossed the goal line and a point is scored.

Referee Signal:  A downward facing flattened palm pointing at the goal.

Washout

A referee uses this to signal no goal or to signal the players have entered the offensive zone behind the puck.

Referee Signal:  Hands start at the chest with the palms down.  Arms sweep outward repeatedly.

Offside

Signals that a player crossed into the offensive zone before the puck.

Referee Signal:  A sideways facing flattened palm pointing at the blue line.

Icing

Having the puck cross the center red line and the goal red line without a defensemen able to play the puck.

Referee Signal:  The Referee will cross both arms stationary in from of the chest.  Both hands will be closed in fists.
